'Everybody loved Alec': Wilmington skate park renamed in memory of local skater (wwaytv3.com) — Wilmington has renamed Greenfield Grind as the Alec Chambers Skate Park to honor a beloved local skater killed in a December 2025 crash. Family, friends, city leaders and skaters gathered for a memorial unveiling celebrating his impact on the community. The driver charged in the incident faces multiple serious counts, with another court date set in New Hanover County.

2. Armed suspect shot by Wilmington police after opening fire (starnewsonline.com subscription) — Wilmington police say an armed person was seriously injured after allegedly firing at officers near Seventh and Red Cross streets Friday evening, prompting multiple officers to return fire. The individual was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is now leading the probe. Involved officers are on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

3. Ogden road washed out by flooding for second time in 2 years (starnewsonline.com subscription) — Heavy rains in the Wilmington area washed out Dove Field Drive between Quail Woods Drive and Courtney Pines Road on Friday, closing a key cut-through between Ogden and Murrayville. Nearly 5.5 inches of rain fell, a daily record for Wilmington, scattering road debris into Smith Creek and prompting utility crews to inspect for damage. Repairs took nine days after a similar collapse in 2024.

4. $615 Mln Granted To Improve Airports Across US (rttnews.com) — Wilmington International Airport is set to receive $6.3 million in federal funding to extend a runway, part of a $615 million package for airport upgrades nationwide. The money will support safety and capacity improvements as air travel continues to grow. Other airports across the country will use their grants for new terminals, towers, and noise mitigation projects.
