5 Most Interesting 2016 Stories from Westlake

This year saw a lot of intense crime come into the city, including a fatal police-involved shooting and the breakup of a prostitution ring.

WESTLAKE, OH - A lot of residents have noticed an uptick in crime this year (weird or otherwise) and some of the city's most popularly read stories in 2016 involve a high-profile incident in Westlake. However, there was a lot of good things that happened in the past 12 months too and we want to highlight those moments as we come to the end of the year.

To help you remember everything that's happened from January through December, Patch has pulled together some of the weirdest, saddest, and most heartwarming stories from the past 12 months.

  • 9 Arrested for Prostitution and Human Trafficking in Westlake - When Westlake Police collaborated with a number of other agencies, including Homeland Security and the County Sheriffs, and arrested nine people for prostitution related crimes, it shook the community. The story immediately became one of the most read this year, and it's understandable why.
  • Westlake Ranked Fourth Best Cleveland Suburb to Live In - Being ranked the fourth best city to live in near Cleveland was both a win and a backhanded compliment for Westlake. The city was slotted behind Solon (third), Rocky River (second), and Shaker Heights (first). A lot of readers across Northeast Ohio were a little surprised by Shaker's placement, but Westlake readers likely felt, simply, that they should have been higher on the list.
  • Westlake High Student Earns Perfect Score on AP Calculus Test - This was just a downright cool story. News media frequently writes about high school sports (and specifically football in Ohio), so these types of stories are fun and important to do. Junior Ryan Karpuszka knocked the test out of the park and earned a lot of well-deserved local acclaim for his feat.
  • Westlake Police Release Details of CVS Robbery and Shooting and 911 Call - Devan Desnoyers, robbed the CVS on Detroit Road and then fled in a white Mazda before crashing at the intersection of Crocker and Detroit roads. Two officers then shot Desnoyers. The whole incident was a disturbing piercing of the normal quiet Westlake bubble.
  • Westlake Couple Robbed at Gunpoint on Halloween - Two unidentified men burst into a Westlake couple's home, pistol whipped the husband, and then robbed the couple. You can hear the disturbing 911 call from the couple in this story.
