Haverford Police Doing DUI Patrol Nights For Late Firefighter

Haverford Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and numerous other police departments will participate in Operation Nighthawk this weekend.

HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, PA — Haverford Township Police, Pennsylvania State Police, and numerous local police departments are will be doing a proactive DUI related training/enforcement initiative in memory of the late Belmont Hills Fire Company firefighter Thomas Royds.

The Bureau of Patrol in the state police's Troop K will be participating in Operation Nighthawk Friday and Saturday

This mission of Operation Nighthawk is to save lives and deter impaired driving through aggressive patrol and DUI enforcement.

Training will take place each night at the Williamson College of the Trades, followed by aggressive DUI patrols.

Royds died after being struck by an alleged impaired driver along Interstate 76 in Lower Merion on July 24 while assisting state police from Troop K – Philadelphia at the scene of a two vehicle DUI related crash.

Two other Belmont Hills firefighters were also hurt in the incident.

All participating departments in Operation Nighthawk are:

  • Pennsylvania State Police from Troops J, K, L, M, N, and the Bureau of Training and Education
  • Downingtown Borough Police Department

  • Haverford Township Police Department
  • Lower Pottsgrove Township Police Department
  • Nether Providence Township Police Department
  • Philadelphia Police Department
  • Tredyffrin Township Police Department
  • Upland Borough Police Department
  • Upper Providence Township Police Department
  • Westtown E. Goshen Police Department
  • Willistown Township Police Department
