CHEERS, JEERS, fills everyone’s EARS at Village Renaissance Faire
Support the public library & have fun too! It's an authentic, affordable, and local Renaissance Faire with a CAUSE
Huzzahs!!!!, cheers, jeers, and laughter will again fill the donated Middletown Grange Fairgrounds this September 15th & 16th as the Village Renaissance Faire returns for its 18th year. The Faire has become one of Buck’s County’s premiere community events boasting over 8,000 attendees that return each year to see an authentic renaissance faire right in our backyard for a relative pittance-- $5 for students, under 5 are FREE. Although adults are a wee more at $10, parking is FREE.
This year, mystical creatures run, hide, and even fly about the fairgrounds. Dragons roam about the faireways, perform shows, and even sell wares. But it is not those dragons that are most sought after, rather, it is Zorg who will capture the intrigue of the wee ones, or just the young at heart. The enchanted village allows attendees to create homes for the little creatures, gnomes, fairies, hobbits, and more. Help or be one, this one weekend only.
“Where else can you enjoy free crafts, period demonstrations, three theatrical ensembles, five musical ensembles, ten dance troopes, and knights jousting on horseback” boasts founder and faire director Ken Hone. As the youngest of three raised by a single mother, he places great value on making the event not only as entertaining as the expensive commercial faires, but also affordable to all. “We do not want anyone to feel they cannot afford to attend…. We strongly believe that the only reason people do not come, is because they do not know such an affordable event occurs in their own backyard.”
Anyone who has come to the faire before, or comes this year, for the first time, will quickly see and feel what he talks about so glowingly. As the faire opens a crime occurs at the gate that quickly makes all attendees a witness to the first of many shows. Through-out the day, justice will be sought and executed along the fairways, the stages, glens, and courtyards. After paying the small token to enter the gates, attendees will be surrounded by beautiful artwork, heraldry, and portraits. Their ears will be filled with live music from varying performers like Recordante, Jack & Brenda, the Rabbit Stampede, and Betsy Chapman.
As you exit the entrance pavilion, the whole fairground becomes a stage—an authentic village at festival time. Wee ones will be captured by stories of dragons, fairies, gnomes and more as the tale of Zorg flying across the grounds being pursued by dragon trainers unfolds. To join the tale, the little ones can find their own mystical name, visit gnome, depot to build fairie homes and traps, or done a costume they borrow or make a crown at the free craft area.
Fairgoers of all ages will also be treated to two ongoing tales that intertwine themselves through-out the day. We are on the same Side could not come at a more appropriate time, as we strive to bring everyone together. If you follow these stories you will not only be treated to magic, laughter, and theatre, but you will also see archery contests, trebuchet launches, living chess, and armored horseback jousting. The stories, aptly called Living Literature, because real actors bring these tales to life, can be seen by themselves, or as Ken encourages, can be followed through-out the day. He shares, “there is nothing like live theatre… unlike a movie, it changes every time.”
In between the tales, there are plenty of other shows and demonstrations to occupy your time. Ten dance ensembles will perform at the Dance Stage and Mystical East, the land where gyspeys and percussion reign. At the end of the day, you can even partake in a drummers circle if you so wish. Young and the young at heart, can enjoy, giant blocks, chess, castle building, bubble blowing, water and sand play in the Kids Kingdom. They may even strike up their own tune with the peasant’s band. Merlin’s magic creates playable shapes out of fabric and air to occupy the wee ones for hours on end. As a reprieve, from these energizing antics, you may wish to view one of our four original puppet shows or living demonstrations of glass blowing or blacksmithing. There are also plenty of historical re-enactments recreated by the Society for Creative Anachronism and Markland.
There are also tons of unique wares and period games for those of all ages—archery, fight a knight, Jacobs ladder, throwing fits, and chickenshot—one of the most popular games--- you never know what might be flying about these grounds… but you will be sure that it will be filled with amazement, appreciation, and, yes, enjoyment. So, come one, come all, and enjoy this day like no-other. You may even see your neighbor acting, but do not expect them to break character, as they, and you will too—have suspended disbelief for just this one weekend.
