Stolen Checks From Mailboxes Prompt Fraud Alert In Northampton Twp.
Northampton Township Police urge residents to avoid using U.S. Post Office boxes. Police said the crime is spreading to neighboring towns.

NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —Mail thefts are continuing at U.S. Post Office mailboxes and the Northampton Township Police Department said the crime is also happening more often in neighboring townships as well.
The police department issued a fraud alert reminder to all residents after receiving more reports of checks stolen from the post office convenience boxes.
Police said the suspects are changing the payee and sometimes the amount.

The department is once again asking residents to avoid using all of these mailboxes —not just in Northampton Township —until the Postmaster is able to resolve this issue.
"We recommend handing mail to the postal worker or going inside the post office and giving it to the employees," police said.

In late October, Northampton police issued a temporary ban after reports of incidents in Richboro, Newtown and Southampton.
As far as residential and business mailboxes, the Postal Service suggests never leaving mail in the box overnight. People who are going on vacation should also have their mail stopped until they return home.
