Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:
1) The Deutschtown Music Festival, a summer tradition in Pittsburgh, is getting a rebrand. Now known as the Northside Music Festival, the free live music event is slated for July 14 - 16. Last year, the event hosted more than 400 acts. "This year, organizers say they are looking to tighten that number up a bit. While no artists have been named yet, it's still all about the community." The name change reflects the location of the festival in the North Side neighborhood, honoring the area as a whole community.
2) Middle and high school students in Pittsburgh will have the chance to test out their entrepreneurial ideas at a youth competition this spring. The returning event offers up to $10,000 in cash prizes to winners and their teachers. "The challenge is being made available to all students in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties courtesy of organizers from BUILD.org, a Redwood City, California-based nonprofit youth entrepreneurship organization." BNY Mellon, Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal, DonorsChoose and the Richard King Mellon Foundation also support the competition.
3) Drinking a beer can play a role in helping pets find their forever homes. Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh and Dancing Gnome Beer recently announced a partnership which entails a unique beer release each month for the rest of the year. The pending beers will each be named after a different animal that is being cared for at HARP's domestic shelters or wildlife rehabilitation center. To kick off the collab, guests are gathering for a beer release party this Saturday from 12-3 p.m. at Dancing Gnome Brewery in Sharpsburg. Local artist Julie Maida will be featuring her work on the various beverage can designs, with the first can's muse being her very own pooch named Sparrow.
4) Some popular Pittsburgh eateries are closing their doors forever, but new restaurants and breweries will keep foodies and beer connoisseurs busy in the city. Mad Mex Oakland on Atwood Street will no longer be in service, due to staffing shortages. For guests looking for food and entertainment, Shorty's Tap x Taco's recent opening in the Waterfront, a sister location to Pins x Pints on the North Shore, might be the perfect place. "Chow down on Mexican dishes like tacos, quesadillas and burritos while you get competitive on the old-school dartboard lane, pinball machines, shuffleboard tables and more." As far as breweries, Aslin Beer Company and Bona Fide Beer Company in the Strip District, Big Sewickley Creek Brewery, Lolev Beer in Lawrenceville and a soon-to-come second location of East End Brewing Company in Mt. Lebanon are serving up cold ones in their new locations.
5) A former Steelers player who played a role in winning two Super Bowls for the steel city has passed away. Running back Sidney Thornton, who played during the Steeler's dynasty years in the 1970s, lived to be 68. A cause of death has not been revealed at this time. In 1977, Thornton was selected in the second-round of the NFL draft. "He was a valuable member of the Steelers championship teams in 1979 and 1980."
