PITTSBURGH, PA - Did police correctly handle the end of Monday’s protest in East Liberty that turned violent and resulted in 20 arrests and nine injured officers? Mayor Bill Peduto wants that question answered.
Peduco has asked the city Office of Municipal Investigations and the Citizen Police Review Board to determine whether officers acted appropriately. The hours-long demonstration was peaceful until its conclusion, when tear gas was used to disperse people.
Pittsburgh did not experience nearly the amount of violence and looting that occurred in other cities following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of Minnespolis police officers. But protests last Saturday and the one on Monday certainly turned ugly.
