Two Broadcasting Icons Remain a Force at WJAS AM
Bill Cardille and Jack Bogut: Two Gems Going Strong at an Age When Many Elect to Occupy the Rocking Chair: A Great Work Ethic!
I wonder how many area residents are aware of the continued presence of two giants of the broadcasting industry as they continue their long and successful careers.
The legendary Bill Cardille and Jack Bogut host daily radio programs on WJAS 1320 AM.
84-year-old "Chilly Billy" was the first voice heard when Channel 11/WPXI, then WIIC, went on the air on 1 September 1957. He went on to host Chiller Theater for twenty years, Studio Wrestling, and has long been the local host of the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. He continues to be heard on local radio commercials. His other work is too extensive to mention. The affable and gracious manner of this suave gentleman has long endeared him to area residents.

I was not able to determine the age of Jack Bogut, but he must be zeroing in on 80. His radio career began in Billings, Montana in 1961. He moved to an entirely different environment at KDKA in 1968, beginning a long fifteen-year stint, in which he charmed listeners through his down-to-earth, folksy, homespun manner and wonderful storytelling.
A tip of the hat to these two local broadcast icons! They have graced us with their presence and we are fortunate to have them with us and active after decades of hard work.
