1,200lb Man Moves To Cranston with Help From a Crane

Firefighters had to build a ramp and cut a door to help him out of his former home at a Providence nursing home.

A 1,200-pound man moved from Providence to Cranston after firefighters used a crane, widened a doorway and built a ramp to help him out of his former home.

Robert Butler is now settling in at his new home at Eleanor Slater Hospital, according to a spokesman for the state human services department. He had been living at Bannister House, a nursing home facility that went into receivership earlier this month, and moved into his new home Sunday.

Butler has been on permanent disability for several years and told WPRI that he isn’t sure if his move was due to the nursing home’s financial problems.

To move Butler, Providence firefighters took him to the roof of the four-story building. He was then put inside a metal container and carried by the crane to a flatbed truck.

Michael Raia of the state office of health and human services said planning to move Butler took more than two weeks.
