CRANSTON, RI — A Cranston woman was arrested and charged with stabbing a man in the belly.
The 28-year-old man suffered a "severe laceration to his abdomen," the Cranston Police Department said in a media release.
A caller reported that a man had been stabbed in the abdomen at the Mansion House apartments on Oaklawn Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday and that a vehicle left the area, according to the release.
"As officers responded, they observed the suspect vehicle, a silver Jeep with a Florida registration, traveling in the area of Cranston Street and Cavalry Street," the release said. "Officers conducted a felony traffic stop, and Markea Smith, 32, of Cranston, was taken into custody."
Smith was arrested on charges of domestic-felony assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, domestic disorderly conduct and domestic violation of a no-contact order, according to the release.
Another occupant of the Jeep, 39-year-old Selena Martinez of North Providence, was arrested on charges of threats to public officials, simple assault/battery, obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, resisting legal or illegal arrest, and disorderly conduct "for her conduct at the scene of the traffic stop," the release said.
Back at the Mansion House, "detectives located evidence inside the apartment, including blood, clothing, and a mop and bucket containing blood, according to the release.
"Investigators also recovered a large kitchen knife in the bathroom," the release said. "The investigation indicated that someone had tried to clean parts of the apartment and remove evidence."
The stabbed man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence where he was stable, according to the release.
