Coronavirus 'Relief Payment' Scam Targets Rhode Islanders: AG

"If you receive a message promising you that money, it's a scam," Attorney General Peter Neronha said.

CRANSTON, RI โ€” Rhode Islanders are warned to be extremely aware of new scams related to the coronavirus, specifically federal aid checks. Attorney General Peter Neronha said residents should be suspicious of calls, emails or texts asking for personal information.

The AG Office's consumer protection department has received complaints from Rhode Island residents of texts messages with a link, saying to click on it to receive their payment. Similarly, emails with the subject line "COVID-19 PANDEMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE." After clicking on the link, residents are asked to provide personal information such as bank accounts, their social security number and more to "get their check."
