Husband And Wife Hit By SUV Crossing Cranston Street: Cops

The wife suffered broken bones and the driver took off, police said.

CRANSTON, RI — A hit-and-run driver struck a couple crossing a Cranston Street and left the wife with broken bones in her leg and foot, police said.

The Cranston Police Department put out a plea for the public's assistance in tracking down the driver involved in the Jan. 11 incident.

Shortly after 5:15 p.m. that day, officers were sent to the intersection of Budlong and Everett roads to investigate a "report of a motor vehicle crash involving two pedestrians with injuries," the Cranston police said in a media release.

"The investigation revealed that a husband and wife were walking eastbound on Everett Road and
approached the intersection with Budlong Road," according to the release.

"The couple observed a southbound vehicle stopped and waiting to turn onto Woodridge Road," the release said. "Believing it was safe to cross, they entered the roadway. At that time, a silver or gray SUV traveling southbound overtook the stopped vehicle allowing the pedestrians to cross and proceeded through the intersection without its headlights illuminated."

The SUV struck both the husband and wife and fled the scene, continuing south, according to the release.

"The husband was not injured," the release said. "The wife sustained broken bones in her leg and foot and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment."

Witnesses were unable to provide a detailed description of the vehicle beyond its color, according to the release, but did obtain video evidence and a photograph of the SUV, which is believed to be a Honda CRV.

"Our network of Flock cameras will now play a role in this investigation as it progresses," the release said.
