State Police: I-95 Pursuit Ends With Crash In EG, Arrests

Rhode Island State Police arrested two Providence men on narcotics, weapons and motor vehicle charges after a highway pursuit Thursday.

CRANSTON, RI — A chase on I-95 in Cranston Thursday night ended in a crash and two arrests. Julio Calderon, 30, and Obiwan Perez, 35, both of Providence, were arrested after Calderon lost control of the car.

The pursuit began at approximately 11:35 p.m. Thursday after their car hit a Cranston police cruiser. Troopers were advised by Cranston Police about the hit and run. Police said it happened as they were attempting to stop a motorist suspected of driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs.

Troopers spotted the suspect’s vehicle moments later travelling south on Interstate 95 near Thurbers Avenue, where it continued to be operated erratically. Troopers continued to pursue the suspect’s vehicle until the driver lost control of the car, which went off the road and struck the median near Exit 7 in East Greenwich about 11:45 p.m.

The two suspects were taken to Kent County Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. As a result of the investigation, troopers seized a loaded handgun that was found to be stolen and a quantity of crack cocaine.

  • License or Permit Required for Carrying a Pistol
  • Carrying a Dangerous Weapon/Substance When Committing a Crime of Violence
  • Possession of Firearms by a Person Convicted of a Crime of Violence or Fugitive from Justice
  • Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance Schedule I-V (Crack/Cocaine)
  • Reckless Driving/Eluding Officer – High Speed Pursuit – Second Offense
  • Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor/Drugs BAC Unknown – Second Offense
  • Driving Without/Expired License – Third Offense
  • Numerous motor vehicle violations

Perez, also allegedly a bail violator, was charged with:

  • License or Permit Required for Carrying a Pistol
  • Carrying a Dangerous Weapon/Substance When Committing a Crime of Violence
  • Possession of Firearms by a Person Convicted of a Crime of Violence or Fugitive from Justice
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance Schedule I-V (Crack/Cocaine)
  • Obstructing an Officer in Execution of Duty

Both men are to be arraigned later today. The chase was one of three police incidents overnight in Cranston. Police are working on a statement about a shooting on Frances Avenue and another crash involving a police car.
