Marijuana and Assault Bring Weekend Arrests

The Middletown Police Department on Monday reported three arrests from the weekend involving allegations of felony marijuana possession, failing to appear to court, and assault:

• On Sunday, Aug. 29, around 6:12 pm, Bryan James Leary, 19, of 63 Clear View Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested for an alleged second offense of possessing marijuana, a felony, after police stopped his car off East Main Road near the Fast Gas service station when he didn't use a turn signal and reportedly recovered pot in his left front pocket, as well as inside a pipe and plastic baggie found in his Ford pickup truck. Police reported they previously arrested Leary on a marijuana possession charge on July 14.

• Police arrested David M. Gilchrest, 41, of 15 Meeting St., Newport, on Sunday around 7:41 pm on an outstanding arrest warrant, issued for failing to appear at a District Court hearing, after police reportedly observed him arguing with another local man on West Main Road near Commercial Boulevard.Upon approaching the men, both men told police they didn't have a problem, but when police ran a background check on both men at the scene, Gilchrest's arrest warrant came up.

• Craig J. Raposa, 24, of 4B Buck Road, Middletown, was arrested Saturday around 2 am at his home, charged with domestic assault, after police responded to a fight involving two roommates. According to police reports, Raposa allegedly told police that he punched the 42-year old victim twice in the face after the victim came home drunk and called Raposa names. The victim refused medical treatment at the scene and declined providing police with a written statement, according to police reports.
