Six Family Activities Under $6

Whether seeking fun in the sun or otherwise, weekends for families can get pricey fast, especially those longer three-day weekends. But we found six great things to do locally—all are free or under $6 per person.

Some activities are weather dependent. When in doubt, call ahead to the number provided.

In no particular order:

• Night Fishing at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge ($5 per night, with proper license): Night fishing permits can be purchased at the visitor's center between 10 am and 4 pm every day but Wednesday, when the center is closed, according to park rangers.  Fees are $20 dollars for an annual permit or $5 dollars for one night. There are no access fees for day fishing at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.  However, a state saltwater fishing license is still required. Enforcement of permits, licenses, size and number of fish are all monitored by the federal park police.  Fishermen are asked to pack out their trash. Camping anywhere in the refuge is prohibited. • Volunteer at the Potter League for Animals (FREE): This can be a great family activity for animal lovers or for families who are unable to have pets where they live but are great with animals. All volunteers are properly trained and appropriately assigned. Animals need exercise, washing, training, or sometimes just a little companionship. Mandatory volunteer orientations are usually held the first saturday every month and the next orientation will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. Advance registration is required. • Simmons Farm Petting Zoo: The petting zoo features the farm's dairy goats, fainting goats, sheep, a llama, a pony, a burro, a pot bellied pig and many geese and ducks. • Pick Your Own Blueberries at Sweet Berry Farm: Time is winding down for the blueberry season that typically ends in August, but kids can certainly load up on berries for under $5, enjoy nature and fresh air while having a great time, and bring home a sweet reminder afterwards. • Norman Bird Sanctuary: With over 300 acres and seven miles of hiking trails, there is plenty to see at all times of the year. Bring your binoculars and look for wildlife, especially birds, along well-maintained trails. Trail fees are $3 for kids and $6 for adults, while other attractions on the grounds are free and others have varying fees. • Third Beach / Town Beach Lot (FREE for town residents): Local residents can opt for a free parking pass that does not include access to Second Beach. Not a bad deal! For information, call Middletown Town Hall or visit the town website.
