1. Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling will host a Newport County Candidate Forum for state General Assembly candidates at 6 p.m. at Community College of Rhode Island, 1 John H Chafee Blvd, Newport.

The forum will focus on state fiscal and policy issues that impact the future of Newport County and the state of Rhode Island's economy.

The following candidates from the Senate districts in Newport County have agreed to attend: District 10: Senator Walter Felag (D) and Virginia Butterworth (R), District 11: Senator Charles Levesque (D) and Christopher Ottiano (R); District 13: M. Teresa Paiva-Weed (D) and Geoffrey Cook (R).

Bruce Lang, founder and founding Chairman of Operation Clean Government, will serve as forum moderator.  The event is open to the public. Citizens Concerned About Casino Gambling was organized in 1977 to fight the establishment of casino gambling in Newport. Its mission today is to oppose the expansion of casino gambling in Rhode Island.

2. The Planning Board meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 350 E. Main Road. Among tonight's agenda items: A pubic hearing on a Preliminary Plan Approval for Peter Gallipeau's proposed 14-lot subdivision at Bailey Ave. and Sachuest Drive; Luise Strauss's proposed wind turbine at 485 Paradise Ave; A Development Plan Review for the School Department's proposed alterations to a new parking lot and other construction work at the Aquidneck Elementary School; And a Special Use Permit application by Karmic, LLC. for a 26-unit mobile home park at 265 Prospect Ave.

The proposed Strauss project, a subject of much public debate, is likely to be continued, as the Planning Board is seeking to hire a special consultant before issuing its advisory opinion.

Also, since the proposed 26-unit mobile home park project is making its first appearance before the Planning Board, that item is also expected to be continued. Download a copy of tonight's agenda here or  from the town website.

3. The Newport County Chamber of Commerce, 35 Valley Road, holds a Human Resources round-table discussion on health care plans and annual renewals, from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

4. Middletown's Economic Development Advisory Committee meets tonight at 5 p.m. at Town Hall.

Topics include: Congressional appropriation requests with an overview of town officials' Sept. 22, 2010 trip to Washington, DC; The status of a Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training Grant; A proposed U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs presentation; Fiscal Year 2011 MEDAC activities; And an update on the ongoing Aquidneck Corporate Park improvement project. 5. The Canvassing Authority will meet at Town Hall at 10 a.m for pre-Election business.

Canvassers' are scheduled to: Make a final canvass and corrections of voter registration lists for the General Election to be held Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010; Certify absentee ballot applications; And discuss other matters relating to the General Election.
