Tax Scammers Target South Kingstown Residents, Spoof Police Phone #
Callers say if victims don't settle tax issues, they will be arrested.

South Kingstown police issued a warning after receiving several reports of tax scams via telephone.
The scammers may be able to “spoof” the police department’s phone number so it appears the call is coming from the police station (401-783-3321).
“(Victims) are being asked to send money to handle tax issues and other legal issues,” police said in a statement. “The caller/s indicate that if the money is not sent then an officer will be out to arrest them. In most instances the caller/s have accents which may indicate a scam originating from outside of the country. The caller ID listed on the phone call may list the police department phone number.”
