Two students from Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District received a nomination from Congressman James Langevin to enter the nation's prestigious service academies.
Sam Finneran, a senior at North Kingstown High School, received one of the nominations from Langevin for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Finneran has consistently achieved the highest level as a student at NKHS while demonstrating a passion for service. He is a member of the National Honor Society, regularly enrolls in Advanced Placement level courses and participates in projects benefiting his community. He is also the leader of the NKHS Junior States of America group that debates current events and political issues.

The second nomination went to Nina Yu of Toll Gate High School, who is applying to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

"Congratulations to Nina and Sam for earning these appointments through their hard work and outstanding performances in and outside of the classroom," said Langevin in a press release.
The pair was nominated following a thorough review by Langevin's independent advisory board, which he formed during his first year in office to ensure a "robust review of all applicants." The advisory board is made up of local veterans of the Academies and educators. All residents of the 2nd Congressional District between the ages of 17 and 23 are eligible to apply. Next year's submissions are due by the end of October 2013.
