📰 News we're reading

• Here are the RI Girls Field Hockey players to watch this season (providencejournal.com) — North Kingstown field hockey fans will want to watch junior Juliette Verkuijlen, who's expected to take on a bigger role after the Skippers graduated several key players from last year's semifinal run. She's featured among standout athletes statewide as teams prepare for another competitive fall season across Rhode Island divisions.

• Annual DEM Deer Survey Offers Glimpse into State Population (ecori.org) — North Kingstown drivers were involved in 59 deer collisions last year, among the highest totals in Rhode Island, as state officials track a 24% drop in crashes. DEM is asking residents statewide to log deer sightings online to refine population estimates, guide hunting seasons, and manage deer-related problems like garden damage, ticks, and road hazards.

• Mildred Elaine James (pvdeye.org) — North Kingstown residents are mourning Mildred "Elaine" James, 90, who passed away July 27 at Roberts Health Centre in town after a long career in nursing and a life devoted to family. Loved ones will celebrate her life at a Requiem Eucharist on September 26 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in East Greenwich, followed by burial in Providence.
