NKHS Student To Compete in National Math Contest
NKHS junior Sam Hollister will compete in the competition on March 14.

Â
Sam Hollister, a junior at North Kingstown High School, will be participating in the 31st Annual American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) – one of the most difficult math exams for high school students. To qualify for the AIME, Hollister scored in the top five percent of students across the nation who recently participated in the American Mathematics Competition 12 for 12th grade and below.  The contests are given across the US, Canada and in many schools abroad.
The AIME contest was established in 1973 as an intermediate step between the high school AMC 12 contest and the U.S. A. Mathematical Olympiad.  The AIME is a 15 question, three-hour examination containing questions that are much more difficult than those on the AMC 10 and AMC 12.  The use of a calculator is not allowed.  Â

This examination is part of a series of contests that leads to selection of the USA Math Olympiad team sent to the premier high school level problem-solving contest known as the International Mathematical Olympiad.
The AIME is intended to provide further challenge and recognition, beyond that provided by the AMC 10 or AMC 12, to the many high school students in North America who have exceptional mathematical ability. The top scoring U. S. citizens and students legally residing in the United States and Canada (with qualifyng scores, based on a weighted average) are invited to take the USAMO.
