Murder Suspect On Rhode Island's Most Wanted List Nabbed In Guatemala: Feds

The Providence man has been on the run for nearly nine years, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

A Providence man on Rhode Island's Most Wanted list in connection with a 2017 murder was captured in Guatemala, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

John Eric Nunez, 36, was wanted by the Providence Police Department since 22-year-old Devin Burney was slain nearly nine years ago, the Marshals Service said in a media release.

Burney was killed in a drive-by shooting in July 2017, according to the Rhode Island State Police.

"Nunez is alleged to have evaded law enforcement since the killing by obtaining false identification documents and fleeing the United States, ultimately establishing residence in Guatemala using a fraudulent identity," the release said.

Investigators learned Nunez may have been in Guatemala a year and a half ago, according to the release.

"Through sustained investigative efforts and close coordination with domestic and international partners, authorities were able to narrow his location and ultimately facilitate his apprehension," the release said.
