Little Compton Police Logs: Accident During Storm, Missing Surfer Stays Safe and Domestic Assault

An accident occurred at the intersection of Meeting House Lane and West Main Road in Little Compton during the height of Irene around noon Sunday.
One vehicle, driven by Ralph Willis, 49, of 411 West Main Road, Little Compton, was traveling north on West Main Road when it collided with a vehicle driven by Alec Cambio, 22, of 1220 Chopmist Hill Road, North Scituate, that was turning south onto West Main Road. According to , both cars sustained major damage and both parties refused medical treatment.

Police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the area of Lloyd's Beach at 5:58 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, for a report of a . Upon arriving on scene, police spoke with Eric Vienne, 35, of 23 Smith Ave., Newport, who stated he went surfing with his friend Keith Santos, 38, of 174 Ocean View, Swansea. Vienne said they lost sight of each other and thought Santos was missing. A search effort revealed Santos lost his way in the fog, and waited on East Island for the fog to clear. After approximately an hour, Santos was able to make it back to shore unscathed.
DUI

Harold Pratt, 45, of 40 Channing Drive, Dedham, MA, was arrested at 7:02 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and refusal to submit to a chemical test. According to police on routine patrol that stormy night, they were traveling behind Pratt and observed his vehicle allegedly swerving and crossing the fog line several times. His vehicle was pulled over and after an investigation, he was charged with DUI.
Domestic assault
Charles F. Sherman, 48, of 57 Francis Lane, Little Compton, was arrested at 5:49 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, and charged with domestic simple assault. Police responded after receiving a 911 call from the residence. Upon arriving on scene, police found the victim injured. Sherman was subsequently arrested.
Man suffers burns from truck fire
Little Compton police, fire and rescue personnel responded to 482 Long Highway on Tuesday, Aug. 23, for a report of a truck on fire and a man suffering burns. Upon arriving on scene, police found Kyle Andrade, 26, of 21 Brayton Road, Tiverton, with second- and third-degree burns to his face and torso. Both Andrade and William Chadwick, of Swansea, were allegedly trying to prime start a dump truck, and in the process, it caught fire and caused injury to Andrade. Chadwick, a volunteer firefighter in Swansea, was able to put out the flames on Andrade, preventing further injury. Police said the truck was destroyed and the case was forwarded to the State Fire Marshall's Office for further investigation.
Pot possession
Lawrence Farnell, 44, of 43 Sakonnet East, Tiverton, was arrested at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, and charged with possession of marijuana. According to police, they were in the area of Taylor's Lane enforcing parking violations to several illegally parked vehicles when a vehicle, operated by Farnell, allegedly pulled up to police asking why there was no parking in the area. While speaking to Farnell, they detected an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed a small amount of marijuana.
Warrant arrest
Dennis Couto, 19, of 1028 East Road, Tiverton, was arrested at 3:34 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, on Meeting House Lane. He was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in Sixth District Court and charged with operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license.
Fake $5 bill found
An unknown party came to the police station at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, to turn in what was believed to be a fake $5 bill found in the grass at . Police said the matter is still under investigation with cooperation from the U.S. Secret Service.
Mental health check
Alfred Mendoza, 28, of 6 Chretian Drive, Little Compton, was brought to Newport Hospital at 5:14 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 for an evaluation after police and rescue personnel responded to the residence for a report of an emotionally disturbed person. He was brought to the hospital after personnel spoke to Mendoza and observed his actions.
