Midstate Roads Icy As Water Mains Break
Water spilling from busted mains is freezing rapidly in Middle Tennessee's frigid air, causing road troubles.

NASHVILLE, TN -- There's no snow and ice accompanying the brutally cold air that's gripped Middle Tennessee, but the frigid weather is still causing hazardous travel as busted water mains are pouring water into the streets, which is rapidly freezing and causing icy conditions despite the dry weather.
Metro Water Services reported at least five water main breaks early Tuesday, mostly south and southeast of downtown along the Interstate 24 corridor. A break near the Edmonson Pike/Nolensville Road intersection created a sheet of ice in the midst of the busy thoroughfare and MWS crews were having a difficult time locating the exact location of the break and it was expected they'd have to dig up the road to pinpoint the break.
A small apartment fire in the Gulch activated a complexes sprinkler system, which sent water pouring into the street at 11th Avenue and Pine, causing icy conditions there as well. In Wilson County, a truck crashed after skidding on ice caused by a main break at Stewarts Ferry Pike near Mt. Juliet Road.
