AUSTIN, TX — Apple will manufacture its new Mac Pro computer in China, shifting assembly from an Austin-based plant that's been churning out the product in recent years, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal reported on the development, noting the Mac Pro — the company's most powerful computer — is currently designed and engineered in the U.S. with American-made components. An Apple spokesman underplayed the news, telling the Journal final assembly "...is only one part of the manufacturing process."

The Mac Pro is used primarly by a relatively small number of professionals largely working in the film an gaming industries. News of the assembly exodus comes after company announcements heralding construction of a second Apple campus in Austin to handle customer support and operations.
