Coronavirus: Austin Bans Golfing Amid Pandemic

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department will close all municipal golf courses, adding to the growing list of banned activities.

AUSTIN, TX — Add golfing to the list of restricted activities in times of social distancing. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department on Monday will close access to municipal golf courses starting on Monday, officials said.

In a press advisory on Sunday, parks officials said gates to each facility will be closed. As a result, walking onto courses will be prohibited, putting an end to golfing, walking, running, bicycling or any other use for the time being.

The ban comes amid restrictions on crowds and guidelines related to social distancing implemented to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus that causes respiratory illness. Previously, officials noted, golf walking only was allowed during the closure. The change expands restricted activities to the aforementioned.
