Wanderlust Yoga Offers Free Classes Amid SXSW Madness

SXSW is fun, but hundreds of thousands of visitors, closed streets and added congestion can be stress-inducing. It's a good time for yoga.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — SXSW is lots of fun, and also rather fulfilling what with compelling panel discussions, engrossing films and soul-enriching music during its week-long run starting on Friday. But it can also be stressful as hundreds of thousands of visitors descend to the city, adding to traffic congestion as locals negotiate around street closures blocked off to accommodate the throngs.

"Serenity now!" one might exclaim in the face of such stress. Fortunately, Wanderlust Yoga is offering free classes timed during the duration of this year's SXSW festival. The classes will surely offer a nice, calming counter-balance to the cacophony of the annual festival that drew some 425,000 attendees to the capital city.

Wanderlust’s Zoe Welch led a free class at the downtown yoga studio in January in conjunction with the food delivery firm DoorDash, marking its entry into the local market. Patch opted to fully immerse into the assignment in what can best be described as an awkward, tentative, grunt-filled and sweat-infused series of inhuman contortions and disturbing twists amid a glistening group of largely young practitioners who seemed to know what they were doing. In the end, however, inner peace ensued — an internal happiness enhanced with breakfast tacos compliments of Taco Ranch. Photo by Tony Cantú/Patch staff.

More free yoga in the offing

Wanderlust Yoga, which has its main studio at 206 E. 4th St., also has scheduled more free yoga classes toward the end of the month. Teaming up with Lone Star Court, Outdoor Voices and True Food Kitchen, Wanderlust Yoga will offer free yoga at a March 30 event after which participants can enjoy brunch cocktails and healthful food fare.

The free event is scheduled on Saturday, March 30, at 9 a.m. It'll be at the Lone Star Court, 10901 Domain Dr. There is complimentary self-parking on site.

Upon arrival, organizers said, Wanderlust yoga instructor Diana Wilcox will lead the class through a morning vinyasa on the pavilion at Lone Star Court. After detoxing, attendees can retox with a complimentary mimosa from Lone Star Court’s on-site restaurant, The Water Trough, and enjoy light bites from True Food Kitchen’s special “TRUE to Go” menu, offered exclusively at the recently opened Domain location.

In addition to stretching and socializing, each attendee will receive a complimentary Outdoor Voices swag bag and have the chance to enter to win prizes including gift cards to Outdoor Voices, True Food Kitchen and The Water Trough, and a weekend stay at Lone Star Court.

The event is free and open to the public, but make sure to reserve your spot here. Space is limited and RSVPs are required to attend. Attendees are asked to bring their own yoga mat, water bottle and towel.
