📰 News we're reading

• El Paso County approves new parks and recreation fees; to take effect Oct. 1 (kfoxtv.com) — El Paso County is raising some parks and recreation fees starting Oct. 1, including new tiered pool rental prices at Ascarate Aquatics Center and slightly higher golf cart rates at Ascarate Golf Course. Daily pool admission and green fees will stay the same, while new seasonal swim passes and updated sports and tournament fees aim to balance affordability with maintenance costs.

• El Paso Sheriff's Office projected deficit grows to $3.5M (ktsm.com) — El Paso County officials now project a $3.5 million deficit for the Sheriff's Office by the end of the fiscal year, driven largely by salaries, overtime, and jail meal costs. Budget staff are giving weekly updates, exploring grant transfers, and planning a $1.5 million contingency for jail meals, while Sheriff Oscar Ugarte leans on overtime to keep law enforcement and jail operations staffed.

• El Paso County Commissioners look to expand paid holidays for staff (kvia.com) — El Paso County leaders are weighing whether to add five paid holiday days for county employees, likely clustered around July 4 or the late-December slowdown. Commissioners say fixed extra days off could reduce burnout, improve productivity, and avoid service backlogs, while essential operations like the sheriff's office would get alternate scheduling to keep critical services running.
