NEW YORK, NY — A massive system-wide outage that left nervous travelers scrambling across multiple airlines Monday morning has been resolved. United, American, Delta, Alaska and Southwest airlines confirmed they were among the airlines affected.

The FAA told media outlets in a statement there was an issue with the system Aerodata that tracks a plane's weight and balance. He said the impact to planes was "minimal."

"It was out earlier this morning and it should be back very quickly," the FAA told The Washington Post.

American Airlines said the technical issue impacted "a few of our regional carriers," and that the glitch has been fixed.

Southwest Airlines told Patch in an emailed statement Monday that it lifted an internal ground stop.

"As of 6:05am CDT, Southwest Airlines has lifted an internal ground stop implemented for about 40 minutes this morning during an outage with a vendor that services multiple carriers with data used in flight planning," the airline said.

Scattered flight delays were expected. Customers should check Southwest.com for updates about specific flights.

"We’re working with Customers on any impacts to their travel plans and we appreciate their understanding as we place nothing higher than the safe operation of every flight," the airline said.

Southwest previously tweeted in response to a tweet from an affected traveler at Dallas Love Field that the outage affected "all carriers using a particular system."

Anxious travelers, many of whom have connecting flights and scheduled meetings, tweeted at airlines to air their grievances. Delays were reported at Akron-Canton, General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.

According to the flight tracker FlightAware, more than 6,000 flights were delayed Monday, including 650 within, into or out of the U.S. More than 300 Southwest Airlines flights were delayed, along with 22 for American Airlines, 35 for United and seven for Alaska.
