About the Session: 
The sessions are approximately 90-minutes long and are conducted in relative silence. They include warm-ups, centering, and breathing exercises to connect participants to their bodies and the world around them. These are followed by a walk and an extended sit which encourages participants to become more fully open and present to their surroundings. We conclude with a returning ritual and a chance to reflect on the experience. This time in nature will not be strenuous; most abilities can be accommodated. All ages are welcomed but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Join Woodlawn &amp; Pope-Leighey House on June 20 for an engaging talk with Martha Claire Catlin, a lifelong Quaker who served for over thirty years as Historian for her longtime worship community, Alexandria Friends Meeting at Woodlawn. Explore how northern Quakers who settled at Woodlawn developed an antislavery colony in 1846 and found themselves in a precarious position when the Civil War disrupted life.

Friends Gather Here: A Legacy of Two Communities at Woodlawn explores the powerful history of Quaker families who came to Woodlawn to establish an antislavery community rooted in equality and nonviolence. Through innovative farming and free labor, they sought to demonstrate an alternative to slavery in Virginia, settling alongside a small, established free Black community already living in the area.This exhibit examines the parallel lives, shared aspirations, and evolving relationships between these neighboring communities. As part of the Virginia 250th commemoration, Friends Gather Here invites us to reflect on this quiet revolution and examine our nation’s foundational ideals.On View: June 27 – December 30, 2026 Admission: Free (with suggested donation)

<ul><li>Where is the event located?&nbsp;On the Plaza across from Cinemark and Coastal Flats.</li><li>Are children and dogs allowed to attend? Yes, as long as they are accompanied by an adult and supervised. This is a quiet reading event, so please be courteous of other event attendees.</li><li>Can I bring my own alcohol? Outside alcohol is not permitted. Visit Uncle Julio’s, Crafthouse, or PF Chang’s to purchase alcohol onsite to drink on the Plaza.</li><li>Is there seating? Yes! We will have extra chairs and tables at the Plaza; however, you are also welcome to bring your own chairs, mats, or cushions to make yourself comfortable. Plaza seating is first come, first served.</li><li>Will it be silent? Well, no. While we’re quietly reading, please keep in mind that this is an outdoor space, so ambient noise is to be expected. However, you do not need to talk to neighbors or other event goers if you do not wish to!</li><li>Is the event free? Yes!</li></ul>
