Former Gov. Jim Gilmore Makes Run for President Official: Report

Associated Press reports Wednesday that Gilmore has filed necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.

Republican James Stuart Gilmore III, 65, a Republican, made it official by filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, the AP reports.

His entry makes 17 Republicans now running for president in the 2016 election.

The former Virginia governor from 1998-2002 recently told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he’ll announce his campaign in the first week of August.

“I bring to the table experience that others don’t have,” Gilmore told the paper.

Gilmore is the second Virginian to announce a presidential campaign. Former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb recently announced he’d seek the the Democrat nomination. Both are considered long shots.

Jim Gilmore had first sought the GOP nomination in 2008, but ended his campaign early in the primary.

The other candidates in the 2016 Republican primary include Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, John Kasich, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, George Pataki, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry.
