📰 News we're reading

1. Loudoun County Substitute Teacher Found Guilty Of Making Threats Against School: Report (patch.com) — Ashburn readers learn that a 19-year-old substitute teacher who worked at Eagle Ridge Middle School was convicted of multiple threat-related charges after violent online statements targeting John Champe High School. Schools, including the Ashburn middle school where he worked, increased security after the anonymous Safe2Talk tip, and sentencing is scheduled for January.

2. This Middle Eastern Cafe Is Expanding To Ashburn: Report (patch.com) — Food lovers in Ashburn can look forward to Cozmo One, a Middle Eastern bakery and restaurant planning to open this year in Ashburn Village Shopping Center off Gloucester Boulevard. The new spot, an offshoot of the Chantilly location, will bring mezze, Turkish flatbreads, doner, shawarma, and more to the neighborhood.

3. Amazon's Ashburn Data Center Plans Must Face Public Review: Loudoun Zoning Administrator (patch.com) — Ashburn residents are learning that Amazon's plan for massive new data centers on the former George Washington University campus can't move forward without a public review and approval from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. Zoning officials now say data centers are not automatically allowed under the old 1972 rules, and additional land-use covenants tied to the campus further tighten what Amazon can do there.

4. Loudoun County nursery donates 1,000 native plants to help communities flourish (wjla.com) — Ashburn Village is getting new elm trees and expanded natural habitat as part of a 1,000-plant donation being installed this month across Loudoun County. Volunteers and nonprofits are turning HOA land and nearby conservancy areas into native plant havens, aiming to boost birds, pollinators, and biodiversity while raising awareness about invasive species and upcoming nursery warning requirements in Virginia.

5. Data centers make heat all year long -- here's how the ground can hold onto it until winter (upi.com) — Ashburn's massive data center hub is part of a growing national debate over how to reuse the constant heat those server farms produce, instead of just dumping it into the air. A North Dakota engineer explains how underground rock and even old oil wells could store that heat for winter, potentially easing power demand and community tensions in data-center-heavy Virginia.
