ā¢ Madison boosts deputy pay as officials warn Verizon landline phaseout could leave rural residents stranded (pjrnews.com) ā Culpeper is cited as one of several nearby counties already paying deputies more than $60,000, a benchmark Madison County just moved to match as it struggles with law enforcement staffing. Madison supervisors also plan to formally challenge Verizonās proposal to shut down copper landlines, warning that spotty cell coverage and limited fiber could leave rural residents unable to reliably reach 911 or medical alert services.
