More Delays for Landmark Mall?

It appears that the demolition date in January will be pushed back.

With the renovation and recent “grand re-opening” of Springfield Town Center just down the road, it’s only natural that some in Alexandria are once again wondering: What aboutLandmark Mall?

The shopping center, which first opened in 1965, was cleared for renovation six years ago but saw holdups after the previous owner General Growth Properties declared bankruptcy.

The last official word was that demolition would begin at the shopping center in late 2014, and then in January, with Sears and Macy’s staying open while renovation began to create a Mosaic District type center.

Alexandria architecture firm Cooper Carry has created renderings that show what a new Landmark Mall would look like.

Renovation deadlines at the mall have seemingly come and gone, several times, over the years.

City of Alexandria spokesman Craig Fifer said Tuesday in an email that the schedule has indeed changed, but that he did not have information about a new date for beginning of demolition.

Springfield Town Center renovation began November 2012 and the reopening was held Oct. 17.
