Sugar Shack Launches 'Donuts for Doing Good' Campaign

Sugar Shack, a new donut shop in Alexandria, has launched “Donuts for Doing Good,” partnering with the Alexandria Police Department, Alexandria Fire Department and Alexandria Sheriff’s Office to reward good deeds with a free donut.

The campaign launches Friday, in celebration of National Donut Day. First responders, as well as Sugar Shack staff, will hand out coupons for a free house donut when they witness people being extra nice.

“It could be anything – helping a person carry grocery bags or cross a busy street, holding a door, going out of your way to pick up someone else’s litter,” explains Sugar Shack owner Rob Krupicka. “These small acts of kindness really do make the world a happier place for everyone, and we love the idea of offering our own act of kindness in return.”

Who better to help Sugar Shack catch do-gooders in the act than Alexandria’s law enforcement officers, deputies, firefighters and paramedics?

“Donuts for Doing Good is a fun, positive way for our officers to deepen their connections within the communities they serve,” says Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook. “Our officers see good people acting kindly toward each other every day.”

Alexandria Fire Chief Robert Dubé adds: “Thanking the people we serve for their everyday acts of caring is a great opportunity to extend our own mission to provide caring service. “

“Alexandria is a generous, kind-hearted community – it’s one of the things that makes our city great,” says Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne. “Our deputies are pleased to help celebrate and reward that kindness.”

People who receive “Donuts for Doing Good” coupons will be treated to one of USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Top 10 Donuts in the United States. Sugar Shack donuts also have garnered accolades from the Washingtonian, Thrillest, Style Weekly and Richmond Magazine, and have been featured in Southern Living and Martha Stewart Living.

Sugar Shack donuts are hand-crafted in small batches using the highest quality ingredients, which are locally sourced whenever possible. A cornerstone of Sugar Shack’s business philosophy is community involvement through philanthropy and local partnerships.

Together We Bake, for example, is a local non-profit group that provides workplace training for women in need of a second chance. Several of Sugar Shack’s kitchen staff were trained at Together We Bake. Our customers also can participate by purchasing Donuts for Doing Good coupons to hand out when they see someone doing a good deed.

“One of our favorite honors was winning the Kid’s Choice Award at the Carpenter’s Shelter Annual Cook Off,” says Carter Batey, Krupicka’s business partner. “We like it when our donuts add a little more joy to the community.” Sugar Shack Alexandria shares donutswith the homeless shelter, a nearby neighbor of the shop.
