2 Fairfax City Educators Receive Or Renew Teaching Certifications
One educator from the City of Fairfax Schools renewed his NBPTS certification, while another achieved her first certification.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Educators at two City of Fairfax schools recently received or renewed their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certifications.
Courtney Buchanan, who is a member of the special education team at Providence Elementary School, achieved her first NBPTS certification, according a Fairfax County Public Schools release.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelors degree in applied developmental psychology and a masters degree in instruction and learning, Buchanan began teaching in 2013, before moving to Fairfax County in 2016.

Daniel Miller who has been an English/AP Capstone teacher at Fairfax High School since August 2020, renewed is NBPTS certification.
Before coming Fairfax County, Miller was a conversation coach at North Carolina Virtual public school and an English/Russian Teacher at Durham Public schools. He earned a bachelors degree in Russian language and literature, and English language and literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also earned a master in arts in teaching English/language arts teaching education from Duke University and a master of education from George Mason University.

In 2014, Miller was in the Fullbright-Russian Teachers Program at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia.
To achieve an initial NBPTS certification or renewal, teachers must submit a portfolio that shows the high quality of their instruction and how it aligns with the Five Core Propositions of Accomplished Teaching in their certificate area. More than 500 FCPS teachers have achieved NBPTS certifications.
