2022 Candidate Profile: So P. Lim Running For Fairfax City Council

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Incumbent So P. Lim is running to retain her seat on the Fairfax City Council in the Nov. 8 general election.

Lim is running against fellow incumbents Jon R. Stehle Jr., D.T. "Tom" Ross, and Joseph D. Harmon, as well as challengers Anahita N. "Ana" Renner, Billy Bates, Kate Doyle Feingold, Craig S. Salewski, and Jeffrey C. Greenfield for one of the six seats on the council.

I take care of my elederly parents (87 and 89) who live in Fairfax County. I have two sons, 34 and 30 years old. 34 years old lives in Fairfax County and 30 year old lives in South Korea

Why are you seeking elective office?

I am seeking re-election to continue to make our city a great place to live, work and play by; promoting the growth of small businesses, making sure to retain our unique small town feel, ensuring diverse housing options that are affordable for all income level, making our neighborhoods safer and pedestrian-friendly, and maintaining green spaces around our city.

The single most pressing issue facing the City of Fairfax is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it.

The single most pressing issue facing the City of Fairfax is growth. Growth has challenges and I plan to make sure we keep our unique character by controlling density, keeping green spaces and appropriate land use.

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I have owned and operated a successful business for the past 34 years. I understand the challenges and rewards of starting up a business, recruiting qualified staff, maintaining their morale, implementing policies, and being able to deal with market trends. Most importantly, I am able to see the big picture, analyze pros and cons and make prompt decisions. In addition, my business is insurance. I have to be a mediator between my clients and insurance companies. My key attribute to having had a successful insurance business is that I am a good listener. I listen to my clients, anticipate the needs and collaborate with carriers to resolve an issue. I have operated on the Council very similarly to my experience as an insurance agent. I mostly listen, figure out what’s needed, and collaborate with stakeholders to come to a resolution. I will continue to serve in that manner.

Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform.

Continue to promote the growth of small businesses, ensuring we have diverse housing options that are affordable for all income level, and making sure our neighborhoods are safe for walkers and bikers.

The best advice ever shared with me was:

Do what you don't want to do first!

What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I am not the most outgoing person but I am and excellent listener. And, I have great work ethic. I read all of the staff reports before all of the work session and/ council meeting to make sure I am prepared well. I am quiet but very steady. I don't talk the talk, I just walk the walk!
