Why are you seeking elective office?
I want to help the City and School Board and be a voice for all the families within our City. As a parent of both an elementary school and middle school students, I'm aware of some of the needs within our current buildings. I know that we need some renovations/repairs/TLC in the coming years and I want to help us move forward with this process. I value the relationship we have with FCPS to educate our children and I want to continue to support this. I am very excited with the extra funds/roles/staffing the City can provide to our City schools within our School Budget, to ensure our City schools can provide to help our students, teachers and staff to excel.
The single most pressing issue facing Fairfax City is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it.
Enrollment numbers. I intend to closely monitor the student enrollment (especially at Providence given all the current/ongoing and anticipated growth) and will watch that our balance of County students and City students is not jeopardized. I know redistricting within the county isn't a quick process and I intend to ensure we are watching the enrollment each year and we are ready to act if any County students needs to be moved back to their home schools. Keeping an eye on this area will hopefully help to reduce any potential overcrowding, while continuing to prioritize our City students education at all schools.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
Serving/volunteering as PTA President for 3 years and being an active member of the PTA for the past 9 years has been a huge accomplishment and source of pride for me. I love that I am full time working parent who has been able to carve out time to show up, volunteer and support all the great things my kids do at school, and outside with extracurricular activities and sports. Our kids are only little for this short period of time and it's very important for my husband and I to make them a priority, be their coaches, support their teams and lead when needed. My mom was also a full time employee (a high school teacher) and she and my dad (a small business owner) were both super involved in the same ways my husband and I are now. They showed us it is possible, and we work hard each day to make sure we show up, whatever that way is. We also understand many working parents don't have this flexibility in their schedules and because we do, we're able to help and support other kids as well through our involvement.
The best advice ever shared with me was:
The days are long, the weeks are short and the years fly by. This was told to me when my oldest was just a few weeks old and I was exhausted with having a newborn. I've since passed this on to every new parent I meet. You only have so many days/weeks/months/years with these amazing little people in your life and I try to do everything I can to make the most of it. While serving in these roles may take me away from them at times, it also reminds me to prioritize our family time together and to be sure the activities I'm choosing to participate in are important, both to me, my family and my community.
What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
I love the City of Fairfax. We had no idea when we moved from MD back in 2011 that we were moving into this little gem of a community. We thought Fairfax was Fairfax, but these 6.3 square miles have become such a warm, welcoming home for our family. I'm happy my full time job allows me the time and opportunity to help make our little City the best it can be, and at this time, I think running for School Board is the best spot for me to serve. I'm eager to meet even more residents, hear their ideas and suggestions for change, and work together to ensure that the needs of all City students are met. The City is definitely a long time home for my family, and I want everyone to see the amazing qualities that I see each and every day. Thank you.
