Cause Of Fire At FCPS' Woodson Complex Yet To Be Determined; Damages Estimated At $8.8M

Fairfax County fire inspectors estimated Sunday morning's fire at an FCPS facilities building caused more than $8.8 million in damage.

FAIRFAX, VA — Inspectors from the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department determined that Sunday morning's fire at the Woodson Complex had caused an estimated $8,851,409 in damage, according to a release.

Units from FCF&RD and the City of Fairfax Fire Department responded around 3:07 a.m. on Sunday for the report of a fire in the 9500 block of Main Street.

The property, which is located on the eastern border of Fairfax City houses the Fairfax County Public School's Office of Facilities Management.

Arriving on the scene, firefighters reported seeing fire and smoke coming from the structure. A second alarm was issued and fire personnel began attacking the fire inside.

Realizing that their efforts had only resulted in minimal improvements and that cracks were beginning to appear on the exterior brick wall, firefighters exited the building and began a defensive operation.

It took firefighters about two hours to bring the fire under control and crews continued extinguishing hot spots for several more hours. No civilian or fire personnel were injured.

Fire inspectors said the fire was accidental in nature and it had originated in an office. The exact cause has yet to be determined.

Neighbors of the Woodson Complex spotted smoke coming from the building and called 911. The fire alarm in the building did not activate, according to a fire department release.
