$9K Given To Free Relative From Jail Investigated As Fraud: Police

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A Fairfax City resident contacted police last month after handing over $9,000 to an unknown person who'd told them they needed the money to get the resident's family member out of jail, according to City of Fairfax Police.

Officers responded around 1:02 p.m., on Aug. 14, to the 3100 block of Jean Street for the report of a fraud. The person who reported the fraud told police they had received a call from an unknown person, who identified themself as a family friend. That person told them they needed $9,000 in order to get a family member out of jail.

A short time later, the person who reported the fraud met the unknown individual outside of their residence on Jean Street and handed them $9,000. The unknown individual then left the area.

Detectives from the police department's Criminal Investigations Division is investigating this incident.
