Afghan Relief And Resettlement Fund Distributes Round Five Grants

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia launched the Afghan Relief and Resettlement Fund in September 2021 to support Afghans fleeing their home country who either pass through or are resettled in Northern Virginia. To date, grants from the Fund total $282,490, and have focused on critical needs such as food, shelter, healthcare and mental health services, as well as longer-term efforts such as legal services, housing, transportation, education, and English language skills. The following organizations received funding:

Annadale High School ($2,300) - Fairfax County Funds will support students during the school day and after school with English language skills, a prayer room, and a newcomer program. Staff will lead an after-school club specifically for Afghan children that includes a cultural field trip, college visits, and a year-end recognition ceremony.

FAMIL ($3,200) - All of Northern Virginia FAMIL assists Afghans who arrived in the United States as part of Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) and resettled in Northern Virginia. FAMIL’s mission is to assist the Afghan refugees through services focused on Employment, Education, and Integration.

Women for Afghan Women ($5,000) - All of Northern Virginia The funding will support case management services to Afghan women. Job placement, domestic violence interventions, assistance with college enrollment, scholarship application, housing, access to available public benefits and social services, client advocacy, translation, interpretation, and referrals to additional services are all included.
