During a preliminary investigation, officers identified a bullet hole at the rear of the home. They also confirmed that the bullet traveled through the home, according to police. The residents were asleep when the incident occurred and no injuries were reported.

Investigators contacted the residents of neighboring homes and learned that many of them had also heard the gunshots but thought they sounded like fireworks, police say.

A spokesman with city police said on Wednesday morning that the investigation is still in the very early stages.

"Our detectives went back out to the area yesterday to canvass the area during the daytime hours," he said.

Anyone with information about this incident or who hears gunshots is asked to call 911 or CFPD's non-emergency number: 703-385-7924. The department has also increased neighborhood patrols in the area.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that city and county police have investigated reports of gunshots being fired in a neighborhood off of Fairfax Boulevard.

Both police departments investigated reports of gunshots being heard over four nights in the area of Arlington Boulevard and Pickett Road near the Gerry Connolly Cross-County Trail. The sound of gunshots were reported Wednesday-Friday, June 5-7 and Monday, June 11, according to police. No injuries have been reported.

"The investigation concerning the possible gunshots in the wooded area near Fairfax Blvd. is still ongoing," the city police spokesman said. "We did not find any evidence of gunfire or fireworks."
