Burglars Targeting Homes in Fairfax Area: Media Reports

Jewelry, other expensive items taken from houses on large wooded lots, say Fairfax County police.

One part of Fairfax County has been hit hard by burglars in recent months, and police are working to determine whether the thefts fit a pattern, according to media reports.

The thieves have taken jewelry and other valuables, in one case stealing about $110,000 worth of property. No injuries have been reported in the thefts, which often occur during the daytime.

Of the string of 19 burglaries, about half of them have occurred in the West Springfield/Fairfax Station area, and seven are in one subdivision off Ox Road, WRC-TV NBC Channel 4 reports. Generally, the homes back up to woods and have long driveways.

Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County police, told the Washington Post that many homes in the county fit that description.

“What we see sometimes is that burglars will try to evade authorities by picking different spots around the county,” she said. “They won’t just pick one spot.”
