Butts Saved! University Mall Theatres Reaches New Seats Goal

Kickstarter campaign needed $100,000. Done with more than a week to spare. And they'e got plans for the extra cash, too.

Call it the seat smell of success.

After a feature from The Washington Post, University Mall Theatres has reached its goal of raising $100,000 at online site Kickstarter for a new set of theater seats.

The old seats are torn and worn, but new seats are expensive and the second-run theater business doesn’t lend itself to cash necessary for an upgrade.

Enter the internet and the theater’s dedicated fans. More than 2,100 donated to the cause. And more than 300 donated $100 or more. They’ve now raised $104,811.

There’s still a week to go in the fundraising campaign. Extra cash will go toward the added cost of reinforcing the floors before installing the new seats.

The Kickstarter ad notes, “If by any miracle we raise more than a hundred grand we will turn this place into a palace for y’all.“
