Friends Gather Here: A Legacy of Two Communities at Woodlawn explores the powerful history of Quaker families who came to Woodlawn to establish an antislavery community rooted in equality and nonviolence. Through innovative farming and free labor, they sought to demonstrate an alternative to slavery in Virginia, settling alongside a small, established free Black community already living in the area.

This exhibit examines the parallel lives, shared aspirations, and evolving relationships between these neighboring communities. As part of the Virginia 250th commemoration, Friends Gather Here invites us to reflect on this quiet revolution and examine our nation’s foundational ideals.

On View: June 27 – December 30, 2026
Admission: Free (with suggested donation)
