On the weekends of November 14-15 and November 21-22, dancers from the Fairfax Ballet Company will be filmed at locations around Old Town Fairfax. This footage will be used for a virtual Nutcracker performance that will be available to view online.

The virtual Nutcracker performance is being funded in part by a generous grant from the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts. While the grant program typically funds live performances, 2020 presented a challenge on how to safely provide public art programs during a pandemic — and the Company stepped up to the challenge.

When COVID-19 cancelled the Company’s Nutcracker performances at Woodson High School and their collaborative Nutcracker performance with the Fairfax Symphony, the Company envisioned an alternative production. Instead of filming in a studio or sharing video of past performances, the Company chose instead to take it to the streets, incorporating recognizable Fairfax City locations as part of the timeless Nutcracker tale while embracing recommended health practices.

This wholly new, unique and exciting virtual production keeps the Christmas tradition in a very 2020 manner for the dancers, their families, and the Fairfax community. This production also embodies the creativity and innovation encouraged by the city Commission on the Arts.
