The tax is administered and enforced by the Virginia Department of Taxation. For questions about administration or enforcement, please contact Virginia Tax at 804-367-8031.

The tax was enacted to curb the use of disposable plastic bags and reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or littered in our waterways, roadways, and open spaces. Revenue from the plastic bag tax will be allocated toward environmental programs.

Several neighboring jurisdictions have enacted a similar tax, including the City of Falls Church, Fairfax County, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, and Loudoun County.
