College Notes: Fairfax Art Major's Sculptures Exhibited In Thesis Show

FAIRFAX, VA — To shine a light on the academic achievements of college students from the Fairfax City area, Patch shares information provided by the students' families and Merit News.

Vivian Ton, an art major from Fairfax, will exhibit a collection of abstracted clay sculptures as part of the "From the Surreal to the Sublime" senior art thesis show at Bridgewater College's Beverly Perdue Art Gallery.

Ton's sculptures are representations of personal experience with chronic pain.

"The sculptures are all treated with a white exterior to show that my pain is an internal experience," she said, in a release. "The fingers, eyes and mouths are placed intentionally to symbolize visual and oral expressions of pain. The surfaces of the sculptures are marked to show where the pain is located."

On campus, Ton is a member of the Asian Student Association and plans to work in a local bakery after graduation with the hopes to one day open her own bakery. Ton's exhibition will be on display in the Eagle's Nest.

An opening reception for the exhibition was held on Monday in the Beverly Perdue Art Gallery located on the main level of the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons.

The exhibition will run through April 28. Gallery talks also are available to the public via Zoom at bridgewater.edu/seniorart.

Alexa Garrison of Fairfax fall 2022 dean's list at Siena College in Loudonville, New York. To be named to the dean's list, a student's grade point average for the semester must be between 3.5 and 3.89.

Ian T. Mahalek of Fairfax was among more than 1,600 students named to The University of Scranton's dean's list for the 2022 fall semester. To earn this distinction, a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours during the semester. Mahalek is a freshman environmental science major in the University's College of Arts and Sciences.

The following students were named to the president's list at Miami University in Ohio by being ranked in the top 3 percent of undergraduate students within each division for the fall semester 2022-23:

  • Ken DeCrosta of Fairfax is earning a bachelor of arts in economics.
  • Dana Meyer of Fairfax is earning a B.S. in education in primary education PK-5.

University of Maryland Global Campus graduated more than 7,600 students worldwide in fall 2022, including the following:

Hunter Hoopes of Fairfax received a Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Sciences from The University of Alabama during fall commencement ceremonies on Dec. 10, 2022.

Jacob Schools of Fairfax, a member of the class of 2023 majoring in electrical and computer engineering (BS), was named to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute's dean's list for academic excellence for the fall 2022 semester.

The following students graduated with honors during the December 2022 commencement exercises at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia:

  • Lina Majdalawieh of Fairfax who graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Nursing - BSN.
  • Gabriel Ravel of Fairfax who graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Music - BM.

Shenandoah University inducted 21 students and alums into the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society on Sunday, Jan. 29. Among those inducted were Jamie Hunstad and Madison Shand of Fairfax.

Maggie Mohs of Fairfax was named to the fall 2022 dean's list at the University of Rhode Island. To be included on the dean's list, full-time students must have completed 12 or more credits for letter grades which are GPA applicable during a semester and achieved at least a 3.30 quality point average.
