The City of Fairfax invites the community to a ceremony to retire the 1973 city seal, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 in the City Hall Council Chamber.

The ceremony will include the retirement of the city police and fire department badges and patches, which feature elements of the 1973 city seal.
The new public safety badges and patches, designed with input from staff from both departments, will be pinned on public safety team members' uniforms during the ceremony.

The new city seal was redesigned as part of the Connecting Fairfax City for All initiative, with creative direction by city residents through a public survey on Engage Fairfax.

The 1973 city seal was designed by the College of Arms in London, at the behest of the city, finalized and formally adopted by the City Council on Sept. 11, 1973. The police department badge and patch were introduced in 1980, and the fire department badge and patch were introduced in 2002.
