Fairfax College Student Visits Bosnia & Herzegovina On Spring Break

FAIRFAX, VA — Rachel Apostolico of Fairfax was part of a group of Shenandoah University students, faculty and staff to travel to Bosnia & Herzegovina recently as part of the school's Global Citizen Project, according to a Merit News release.

Doing the weeklong trip, the SU group traveled to Sarajevo, the nation's capital, and toured the various sites associated with the siege of Sarajevo. This included visiting the nearby town of Srebrenica and the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial and Cemetery for the Victims of the 1995 Genocide. They also spent a day at the University of Sarajevo. A

Group members also toured Travnik and Jajce, two royal towns that were home to medieval Bosnian kings, and hiked Bjelasnica mountain in the village of Umoljani.

Traveling to Herzegovina, the group toured the city of Mostar and the villages of Blagaj and Pocitelj, and visited the towns of Jablanica and Konjic.

Since 2005, about 1,000 members of the SU community have traveled to 68 countries as part of the the Global Citizenship Project. After going through an application process, a committee choses which students, faculty, staff and trustees will be traveling during spring break as part of the project.
