Fairfax Schools, Fairfax City Announce Afternoon Cancellations

Criticized for response Tuesday morning, FCPS planning ahead for afternoon activities.

Fairfax County Public Schools is canceling afternoon and evening programs across the county due to the snow event Tuesday.

This includes all activities at schools or on school grounds.

  • afternoon preschool classes
  • extracurricular activities
  • interscholastic contests
  • team practices
  • field trips
  • middle school after-school programs
  • professional learning and training courses
  • adult and community education classes
  • recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS

“At this time, we are planning to dismiss schools at their normal dismissal time, however, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation and will keep parents apprised,” according to a FCPS statement.

  • All afternoon and evening Parks and Recreation classes starting after 2:00pm operating out of Sherwood Community Center, Green Acres Center, Old Town Hall, city parks or schools will be cancelled.
  • The Senior Center will remain open until 5 p.m. today, Tuesday January 6th.
